View Public ProfileDistinguished and Famous people from Brisbane South
South Brisbane and the Annerley–Yeronga area have supplied childhood settings for important Australian writers. Their books turn remembered houses, streets and family life into something more enduring than a list of famous names.
📚 Jessica Anderson
Jessica Anderson grew up at Villa Street beside Yeronga Memorial Park during the 1920s and early 1930s. Her writing drew on memories of that Brisbane childhood, including in Tirra Lirra by the River, which won the Miles Franklin Award, and Stories from the Warm Zone and Sydney Stories. She described the latter as autobiographical fiction. Local history walks have connected passages from her work with her childhood house, school and neighbourhood. The relationship is a documented upbringing that fed imaginative writing; fictional characters need not be treated as literal records of real residents.
📚 David Malouf
David Malouf grew up in South Brisbane, a setting that remained important to his understanding of memory and place. 12 Edmondstone Street explores a childhood house and the world around it, while Johnno made Brisbane central to his first novel. He later wrote widely across fiction, poetry, essays and opera. The south-side connection begins with home and family, rather than an honorary association added after literary success. His work offers readers a particular way of noticing the city through remembered rooms and streets.
